Il fascismo e il consenso degli intellettuali (Fascism and the consensus of intellectuals)

Gabriele Turi, Il Mulino.

This volume marked the beginning of a long line of research dedicated to the relationship between intellectuals and the regime and the end of the common idea that cultural professionals had mostly been anti-fascists or a-fascists. The consent to the dictatorship based partly on convenience and partly on ideological sympathy, the protagonism of many academics (like Giovanni Gentile, to whom Turi himself dedicated a biography in 2006) in the construction of the new state and the acquiescence of the majority of members of universities and academies even in the face of the most despised measures of the regime (such as racial laws) represented a turning point in the perception of the “Ventennio”.
