the Munich putsch

1923

8-9 November

The German National Socialist Workers Party, led by Adolf Hitler, attempts a coup d’état (the Munich putch) which is thwarted and ends with Hitler’s arrest. Founded on the exaltation of nationalism, on the idea of the superiority of the Aryan race and on pan-Germanism, the NSDAP quickly equips itself with paramilitary components, the Strike Teams or SA. After the first disappointing electoral experiences, under the pressure of the 1929 crisis and the political and social instability that overwhelms Germany, the Nazi Party increased its support to become the first party with almost 37% of the vote.
